It was an amazing experience to be there. To be where, historically, my ancestors worked enslaved on rice plantations. Where my ancestors persevered against all odds, in a world very hostile to their existence.
I felt all at once pride but also sorrow for what they had to endure. I reminded myself of the importance of the work of recovery in studies of slavery in the United States.

My ancestors are from Wadmalaw Island, they lived on Martins Point WhitMarsh plantation. I recently visited my roots and graveyards Jenkins Cemetery as well as New Jerusalem A.M.E. I’m still researching my family history in hopes of putting all the puzzle pieces together.
